Currently situated in Tokyo, Japan, Kumano was involved in several musical projects prior to Draw Some Tapirs. These previous projects (including effrum, Absent Referent and Rayden Rexia). The latter two brought close collaborations between Kumano and Wooly Mar with Kumano working mainly on electric guitar. In Effrum, Kumano continued to serve her usual guitar antics with the incorporation of digital sequencing. The instrumental nature of the project expanded the horizon for experimentation and sought to engage the listener in the process of practice. With the astute drumming of Kevin Dineen (Run Return), Effrum played in 2004-2005 as a duo plus a laptop.
With the move to Tokyo, Draw Some Tapirs is a three-piece band engaged in instrumental chaos.
